RUNNING UPDATE
🏃🏻 Comparison is The Thief of Joy
This will be my last running update for a little while. If you've been keeping up, thanks for reading.
Three months ago, I started running with a simple goal: live a healthier lifestyle and have fun along the way. Last week, I finished my first 10k, smashing my personal best by 13 minutes. The homestretch felt electric, and that runner’s high? Absolutely real.
A week later – last night, I challenged myself by joining the faster group in our weekly run club. Their quick pace pushed me to my limits during our 15k run.
Struggling to keep up, I found myself continually lagging behind, gasping for breath as they surged ahead and waited at the checkpoints for me. It didn't help that my right knee started acting up as it normally does during longer runs.
Despite beating my 10k personal best from last week, I felt terrible and even embarrassed. Then it dawned on me that it's senseless to measure myself against many of those who've been part of the run club for a decade when I've only just begun.
The only competition worth having is with myself. Yet, the desire to improve keeps me motivated. My next milestone: a half-marathon in January 2024.
However, I'm wrestling with jumper's knee, aka patellar tendonitis, and now browsing the web for knee braces online. Feeling the weight of age, but not letting it slow me down. If I do decide to run my first 21k, I'll be sure to let ya know.
